I’ve worked almost exclusively with one urgent care group, but did moonlight at 3 others.Ĭompared to primary care, urgent care is actually closer to what I expected from medicine as a career. I was a PCP for 2 years then switched to Urgent Care where I’ve worked for 4 years now. and have worked in multiple places all in the same state (still Northeast) since graduation. It will be a somewhat long comment, but hopefully it will help some! I’ll provide as much info as I can about my experience as an FM doc working in urgent care. I’ve also heard that some FM docs (depending on the setting) can moonlight or work in rural ERs, but questioning if this requires an EM fellowship or not.Īdditionally, have any of you pursued fellowship in something and done it full-time or part-time in addition to outpatient, inpatient, or OB? I’m wondering if anybody has experience with urgent care settings and what the schedule is like in terms of shift schedule, flexibility of creating a schedule, work-life balance and compensation? I also met another FM resident who recently matched into a Sleep fellowship. I’ve known faculty in my school to do part-time Sports Med (after fellowship) and part-time Urgent Care and still have time for themselves and their families. I want to reiterate that I’m very happy with Family Medicine. I have to do that in April post-match because mine in 3rd year was cancelled due to COVID.
Recently, after rotating many months in clinic, I realized that I liked the acuity of urgent care a lot more. I’ve been rotating this year in outpatient, inpatient, and OB settings. So I’m an OMS-IV about to hopefully match into FM residency soon.
